It first started with building various small assemblies for a few jobs here and there, and now the past few months we have never been busier! We are always trying to find new ways to grow and get better at what we do! Huston strives to be the best in the area by taking measures to ensure we are powering innovation on and off the job site!             We have had several conduit assembly projects recently and up next is “our bread and butter” so to speak. Huston won the bid for a large Apartment Complex job in Bloomington called the “Standard at Bloomington”. A three building, 439-unit, 1,800 bedroom, apartment complex that has anything from a studio apartment to a 5-bedroom apartment.
            This project has over 50 different unit layouts, which requires a lot of work up front from the design side of the pre-fab world. That work includes measuring the layouts of each unit type and adding them to a standard operating procedure (SOP) for not just wall assemblies, but from the electrical panel for each apartment to the first wall assembly on each circuit. In the electrical trade, we refer to this as “the home run.” After each one is measured, a panel schedule is created that shows circuit breaker size, wire size, and length. Our pre-fab team can then build the entire panel and ship it out to the job site.
For wall assemblies, we design the receptacles to daisy-chain together, and we try and completely build the lighting switches in house to minimize time in the field. We tail these devices, which includes making up the connection to the device with wire and placing a push-in connector on the other end. This allows the field electrician to daisy-chain the devices around the room at a much faster rate. All they need to do is run the wire to the next assembly in line, strip the wires back and push them into the push-in connector. Once finished, they place the device back in the box with a metal protective cover. There is no need to mess with the device again until trim out. This allows us to have a more efficient and safer job site. Huston’s number one value is Safety First. Taking steps to pre-fab assemblies ensures that we are taking extra precautions to make our job sites cleaner, which in turn helps us maintain a safe job site. After everything was designed, we ordered nearly 20,000 devices, over 630,000’ of wire, that is nearly 120 miles of wire! That would easily stretch from our Lafayette Pre-fab shop to the job site in Bloomington!!    
Huston Electric BIM group helps streamline field installation:
     One of our most recent projects for our Pre-Fab team has a lot of gear and specialized equipment that needs a generous amount of power. After receiving the model of the building and the original trade models, the coordination team from each trade began meeting once a week via a video conference call. After 6 weeks of coordination effort, decent progress was made. In the BIM process, each trade designs everything being put in the building based on the submittal files. Each submittal shows a detailed drawing of what the product will be that will be installed. The Electrical BIM modeler takes each submittal for transformers, generator, electrical panels, lights, main switchboards, life safety gear, etc. and models it correctly in the building. Along with this, all the equipment needs power, so the conduit is drawn in. Using the BIM process to coordinate each trade really helps streamline the installation for everyone. - [Huston’s Role in Construction of Grand Junction Plaza](https://hustonelectric.com/hustons-role-in-construction-of-grand-junction-plaza/): We had the great privilege of assisting in the construction of Westfield's new Grand Junction Plaza. Grand Junction Plaza is a new development that opened to the public at the end of 2021 in the heart of downtown Westfield. The plaza includes a six-acre park complete with an amphitheater, walking trails, and an immersive playground. Three structures were built on the property to house public amenities and the necessary equipment in storage rooms. Huston Electric was awarded the entire electrical scope of work for this project. For Huston, this project started in the summer of 2020 and was completed at the beginning of this year. Huston's role in this project was to run power and install all the electrical components in the park including the light poles that line the perimeter and walking trails. Each pole is connected to a lighting control system installed in one of the electrical rooms. Three structures were constructed in the park; Huston handled all the electrical for each. One of the structures is set up to hold public amenities like restrooms, lockers, a café, and a temperature-controlled gathering space. Inside that structure, Huston installed linear LED light fixtures and floor lighting around the indoor perimeter (pictured in the gallery below).
Huston Electric installed over 35,000 feet of PVC conduit underground during this project (just over 6 ½ miles) that provided raceways for power, lighting, emergency power, telecommunications, A/V and fire alarm. As well as power to 76 light poles and 3 structures. With (2) directional bores and (28) Quazite boxes ranging from 11" X 18" to 36" X 36" Huston Electric was able to successfully distribute all necessary power and communications throughout this challenging project. Huston Electric also provided and installed a 35Kw generator located 450' away from the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), for emergency power to Café building and select site lighting.
Huston Tech, our specialized technology division was also included on this project. Huston Tech was responsible for providing the copper and fiber infra-structure for voice / data transmission. The fiber cabling was run underground to connect each data box and each structure to control systems. In addition to Huston Tech installing data boxes on some of the light poles, they also installed other devices such as wireless access points, speakers, and security cameras. In the amphitheater space, Huston Tech installed the theater cabling system to support line, mic, and speaker level audio signals.
The City of Westfield has big plans in the works for how they will utilize the new park to entice visitors which include plans for an ice-skating rink and corresponding amenities in the winter. In addition, to the already determined uses for this park, further development is projected for this site as well, including construction of possible additional structures. Residents of Westfield and the surrounding communities look forward to seeing all the wonderful things that will happen at this community space. - [New Process News from Huston’s Pre-Fab Shop](https://hustonelectric.com/new-process-news-from-hustons-pre-fab-shop/): When you think of prefabrication, do you think it can only be done for MC cable and Romex assemblies? Think again! We received two separate requests from foreman to pre-fab pipe assemblies. The first request came from our Hagle Hall job. The second was from our foreman in charge of the Logansport Intermediate School project.
For Hagle Hall, our Pre-Construction Services Engineer, Eric, took every device room by room and created a build sheet for it based on our pre-fab SOP (standard operating procedure). He gave each assembly a device type, raceway type, a circuit number, quantity, and to the request of the foreman for the job, Adam Robbins, marked whether it had an offset. Adam came to prefab asking for an offset on the pipe assemblies to gain access to the device in the wall from above the ceiling. A simple 3-1/2” offset near the top end of the assembly was all that was needed. This building also had window pockets around the entire exterior of the building. Instead of an offset there, we gave Adam a 90-degree bend above the window pocket and out 3’ to be able to access the device. Both assembly types were made with wire already in the conduit sticking out 16” to 24” so the field install only consisted of mounting the device box at the correct height, securing the conduit inside the wall, mounting a junction box to the other end of the conduit, and connecting the wires from the power source.
We could have easily put a 10’ stick of conduit and been done with it but we wanted to expand the potential of what we can do in pre-fab shop As you may recall from the last Pre-Fab Blog, BIM coordination was completed on this job so we took the pre-fab one step further. We flew through the coordinated 3D model of the building and looked above the ceiling of every single device. If there was an HVAC duct, fire main, plumbing lines, etc. up against the wall above a device, we measured from the top of the device box to the item in the way and marked the build sheet with enough conduit to get either above or below the obstruction based on how close to the ceiling it was. This greatly helped in the area above the “World’s Largest Drum Display” where the ceilings were 20’+ with massive windows and very little space to access the required power devices down low.
As for Logansport Intermediate School, the foreman, Avery Zink, requested pipe assemblies with 4-11/16 boxes with extension rings above the ceiling to gain access to those devices. We had several different device types for this job which included the typical power assembly, power/data Assembly, data only, wireless access points, and projector locations.
New to the pre-fab shop were the wireless access points and the projector locations. The wireless access points (WAP) are a simple T-bar ceiling grid hanger bracket with a 4SQ electrical box. The most challenging component was the projector assembly which required a more complex assembly. The specification for the assembly was a 4SQ box for the power with two duplex receptacles on the same bracket as a 5SQ box for the data portion. If you do some research for a bracket that holds both, you will find there is not a lot of options. In Pre-Fab we are fond of the typical adjustable spanner bracket but being as the two different boxes are separate depths this would not work. So, we found a three hole bracket that fit both boxes, we put the power on one side, the data on the other side using a 5SQ and a two gang mud ring with 2, 1-1/4” conduit stubs out of the top of the box. All the electrician in the field must do is mount the bracket to the studs at the correct height and run the data cables. A very simple and clean install.
 
What can Huston Pre-Fabrication do for you?
- [Huston’s Prefabrication for Hagle Hall at Purdue](https://hustonelectric.com/hustons-prefabrication-for-hagle-hall-at-purdue/): Hagle Hall is a building on Purdue University’s Campus specifically designed for the Purdue Marching Band. Huston Electric bid the project, won the job, and began the work soon after. From the beginning it was clear that this job required BIM Coordination to help ease the installation process between trades.
During the BIM process, Adam Robbins, Foreman of the project, decided he wanted to try a new conduit support system, the B-Line Conduit Trapeze support. Adam simply provided me with the amount of homerun conduits going down the hallway and Eric Purtzer, Huston’s Pre-Construction Services Engineer, found the correct size of support. Eric was able to find the actual model of the bracket and place it in our REVIT model. Drake Lindsey, a technical specialist, then used the Trimble Total Station marking the mounting holes and then a worker placed blue banger hangers on these marks. Coordination allowed us to run conduit tight to the deck, so next, concrete was poured, forms were removed, and Adam was able to bolt these hangers directly to the deck. No threaded rod was needed to install these supports as we could run tight to the deck
This turned out very well and was very quick to install in the field. Two guys installed the hangers and ran about 1,000 feet of conduit in one day. Soon after that, Adam was asking if we could translate more of the BIM model to the field.  We took it to the next level by attempting to bend feeder conduits in Prefab with dimensions straight from the building model.
Working with both Adam and Rob Melin, a journeyman electrician with over twenty years in the industry, Eric got drawings created with the dimensions needed and Huston’s Prefab Shop got to work bending these 2-1/2” IMC feeders. With some additional software to REVIT, which Huston uses to do 3D modeling for coordination. Eric was able to place regular strut hangers in the model, which were also marked before concrete was poured. The add-on software created a build schedule of the hangers, and the prefabrication process allowed our team to cut the strut and threaded rod to length and even completely assemble the smaller ones. This process is not new as we were able to prefabricate nearly 3,500 hangers for Foundational Sciences Building at Ball State. On that project, we sent the bent feeders and hangers marked with a number and an installation drawing showing where each hanger needed to be installed. This process made installation a breeze

- [Huston Dives In To Help On Purdue Aquatic Center](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-dives-in-to-help-on-purdue-aquatic-center/): In August, Huston Electric provided and installed new LED lighting over the competition pool and diving well in the Purdue Aquatic Center. After being awarded the project, Huston got the right to work acquiring fixtures and planning ahead. The schedule only allowed for 3 weeks with completion required by the middle of August. The first step was to demo the existing large and heavy light fixtures and frames. In their place, Huston provided and installed new Lux Dynamics Wave LED light fixtures. From demo to final clean up the project took 2.5 weeks to complete. This was thanks to a great Purdue staff, our skilled electricians, and the help of two 77’ atrium lifts. The new, LED lights should pay for themselves in a short 14 months and with the new fixtures weighing only one-third of the old, Purdue has even mentioned using the roof for alternative purposes. The Purdue University staff seem very pleased with Huston’s ability to provide a high-quality product within the time restraints given. David Boudia, Olympic diver and Purdue Alum were excited about the new lighting in the Aquatics Center and even took to social media to applaud Purdue on the new upgrade.
 
- [Huston plays big role in Rise on Chauncey build](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-plays-big-role-in-rise-on-chauncey-build/): Huston Electric’s involvement with the build of The Rise on Chauncey began at the end of 2017. As a design-build job, Huston played a large role early on in designing the electrical layout of the building. Once the plans were complete, Huston’s prefab team started early on prepping all the power and lighting for the 281 apartments and main spaces. Not only did Huston provide all the electrical work and power but all of Huston’s divisions played a role in what you see today. Huston Generators installed two permanent backup emergency generators. - [Huston delivers new signage for Silo Storage in Indianapolis](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-delivers-new-signage-for-silo-storage-in-indianapolis/): Silo is a new storage facility in Indianapolis that provides the highest level of security for cars, trucks, and motorcycles.  They are a first-of-its-kind collector of exotic vehicles in the Indy area offering concierge car storage, conference rooms, and even a luxuriously outfitted bar.  Silo caters to the most prestigious car owners and offers a lavish setting for storage and admiration of the automobiles. When it came to material choices of the signage, we knew it had to make an impact.  The “SILO” letters are front-lit and back-lit reverse channel letters with the faces being routed silver aluminum with ½” push-thru white acrylic and illuminated with white LEDs.  These letters are baffled and back-lit with red LEDs.  The eagle is also front-lit and back-lit.  The face of the eagle is routed, backed with white polycarbonate and illuminated with white LEDs.  The eagle is baffled and back-lit with red LEDs.  The eagle reverse channel logo is painted red.  The lettering reading “AUTO CLUB AND CONSERVANCY” are non-illuminated reverse channel letters. Huston’s graphic design team provided the scaled rendering and material specs for fabrication of the signage.  We provided a smooth installation using a 2-man crew with a bucket truck to get the job done. - [Immaculate Heart of Mary helps refresh of their current technology.](https://hustonelectric.com/immaculate-heart-of-mary-helps-refresh-of-their-current-technology/): Huston Electric was contacted by Immaculate Heart of Mary to discuss a possible refresh of their current technology.  Huston visited the school to provide an assessment of their classrooms, and asked the administrators and teachers what they wanted to be able to accomplish with their new technology.  They informed us that the previous installer was very impersonal, they did a poor job on the installs, and they were very hard to get a hold of after the installation. At Huston, we take great pride in being there for our customers before, during, and after the installation.  For Immaculate Heart of Mary, we ended up removing and disposing of all their existing whiteboards, and replacing them with SMARTs new 65” SMART KappIQ Interactive flat panel displays.  We also installed SMART Speakers for enhanced sound in the classrooms.  The installation of all 24 rooms was accomplished in the time frame they needed, we connected each one to the teacher’s computer workstations, hiding the wires so they are free from view.  Along the way we answered questions and worked with the staff to ensure they had each board where they needed them, and that they knew to operate them by the time the school year started. - [Huston plays big roll in installing Ross Ade Stadium Lights!](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-plays-big-roll-in-installing-ross-ade-stadium-lights/): Huston Electric installed 15 light poles with 320 LED sports lighting fixtures to complete this 5.6 million project on Purdue University’s Ross-Ade Stadium over the course of three months. HUSTON ROLE: Electrical Power Stadium Lighting Installation Lighting Controls Prefabrication PROJECT SUMMARY: Huston Electric had the opportunity to light Purdue’s Ross Ade Football Stadium for the first Purdue Home Football game, September 8th, under new LED lights.    Huston worked with Wilhelm Construction to complete a $5.6 million dollar project that will allow Purdue’s football team to now host night games. The university approved the project once the Big Ten Network gave the go ahead.   Doug May, Wilhelm Construction Superintendent on the project, worked alongside Huston’s team and said this was the first time he worked with Huston Electric, and he was very impressed with the team’s professionalism and proactive attitudes.   “This was my first time working with Huston and I would work with them again. They were very good about sticking to the tight deadline and working out design problems that could potentially impact the schedule,” May said.   The project consisted of: 15 light poles, 11 that span the east side of the stadium and one in each of the four corners of the field.   Ribbon-style lighting will connect the 11 east-side poles and will be replicated on the west side, attached to a new 360-foot catwalk atop the Ross-Ade Pavilion. 320 LED sports lighting fixtures, each one individually controllable via a DMX control system, which will allow for full remote adjustment options. There will be 140 diodes per fixture, for an approximate total of 45,000 diodes. The lights will yield 320,000 total watts of power and more than 36 million lumens of light output. The first night game took place on September 8th, with no further night games scheduled at this time.   Save Save
- [Brookestone Office Complex Enjoys Quality New Signage](https://hustonelectric.com/brookestone-office-complex-enjoys-quality-new-signage/): Brookestone is an office complex located in Kokomo, Indiana with 19,000+ square feet that is comprised of office suites and conference rooms to fit small business needs.  This building was formerly the home of a local UAW so the building underwent an extensive interior remodel through Perkins Contracting.  Their renovations included new signage to advertise for their tenants and lighting retro-fits to the interior and exterior fixtures; all of which were provided and installed by Huston Electric. The lighting retro-fits were extensive both on the interior and exterior of the building.  Fortunately, the cost was off-set due to Duke Energy’s rebate program for energy efficiency upgrades.  Duke’s rebate incentive totaled upwards of $18,000 to compensate for the investment in retro-fitting so many fixtures.

- [Marble The Steakhouse Receives Grand Sign Package](https://hustonelectric.com/marble-the-steakhouse-receives-grand-sign-package/): Do you want your signs to stand out above the rest with quality design and craftsmanship?  Look no further, Huston can deliver on all of your signage needs!  Our most recent example of this can be seen at the new Marble The Steakhouse located in downtown Kokomo.  We provided two wall signs and a perpendicular sign all with flanged edges, dimensional lettering, and digitally printed graphics of the cow logo.  The flanged edges help give the signs depth as opposed to just doing a flat sign panel.  The dimensional lettering is a sophisticated way of displaying the lettering for “MARBLE” “THE STEAKHOUSE” and the digitally printed cow logo really adds to the character of the signage.
Along with the building signs, we also made a cut-out cow from PVC and applied digitally printed vinyl over it and hung it over their kitchen door.  We did another digitally printed cow logo on an old-fashioned electrical box and applied vinyl to three exterior doors using their logo with the hours of operation, “Please Use Main Door”, and “Employee Entrance”.  Just like Marble is a “cut above” other steakhouses, we feel the same about the signs we provide.  Many competitors in the sign industry may offer a cheaper price, but the materials will reflect that as well.  We offered these attractive signs to Marble at an affordable price, but went the extra mile in recommending better materials to help them visually communicate their quality brand.

- [A Residential Control Project Like No Other](https://hustonelectric.com/a-residential-control-project-like-no-other/): In my 10 years of audio video work and programming Control4 systems I have had the opportunity to do some incredible, very fun, interesting, projects. I’ve designed and installed systems for residences, restaurants, offices, and conference rooms.  Each one had their own unique objective with different aspects of AV and automation control.  As comprehensive and technologically advanced as many of them have been, none of them quite had it all.  It just hadn’t happened… until now. From time to time in everyone’s career there comes a project or assignment that stands out.  A dream job.  A unicorn.  My dream job came about in the form of a 14,000 square foot mansion on the outskirts of Lafayette. When I first saw the prints and sheer scope of the job I was in awe and must admit a bit intimidated. While I had done work in large, elegant homes before, nothing had really measured up to the scale of this home. However large it seemed, I wasn’t going to let the opportunity pass me by and was up for the challenge. After many hours of design work and meetings with Control4 and the client, they ultimately accepted our proposals over our competitors’.  The work was completed over two years and was a success. I’ve been very pleased with how the system has turned out and more importantly the client has been as well. Here are some of the features this full blown Control4 smart home has to offer.  Whole House LightingThe home has Control4’s wired lighting system. I programmed 26 modules with 8 circuits each. There are over 60 wired low voltage keypads with over 200 buttons that had to be programmed individually. Each button has its own custom label.Whole House AudioSixteen independent audio zones can be controlled together or separately through Control4 a matrix switch and amplifiers. This includes outdoor and landscape audio. The system can stream applications such as Spotify and Pandora and they even have built in Airplay to stream from an iPhone or Apple device. Whole House VideoThe home has a Control4 HDMI 4K matrix switch that distributes up to 10 different sources to one of seven Sony XBR televisions in the home. Universal remote controls give easy access to source selection. The new system seamlessly integrates multiple video sources to be selected and distributed to a new Vivetek ceiling mounted projector and 120” drop down projection screen. The video sources include Apple TV, Microsoft wireless display adapter (WiDi), Sony Blu ray player, and a local in wall connection for devices such as laptops. The system also features a 4-zone 70v audio amplifier to distribute audio to four separate areas independently or together. A microphone is also mixed in for use when public address is needed. Music from Pandora is programmed to come on each morning throughout the building. Two wireless Control4 thermostats with occupancy sensors will seasonally lower/raise the temperature when the union hall is vacated. These new modifications have created an ease of use and savings of energy for union members and individuals renting out the hall. We installed a full color 15.85mm Daktronics electronic message center at Indiana Heartland Federal Credit Union.  Their new sign helps them stay in touch with their customers by advertising current rates, special events, and promotions.  The sophisticated design of the sign structure fits perfectly with the aesthetic of Indiana Heartland’s new building. - [Huston Helps Family Psychiatric Center With New Lettering For Their Current Monument Sign](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-helps-family-psychiatric-center-with-new-lettering-for-their-current-monument-sign/): Not Everything Goes According to Plan… Huston helped Family Psychiatric Center with new lettering for their monument sign at the end of 2016, but not everything went according to plan.  Family Psychiatric Center had an existing monument-style sign with wooden letters and they asked us to provide new painted aluminum letters of their new logo.  We started by removing their letters and providing an aluminum substrate that was covered in print vinyl to match the paint color of their building.  This served as a new, clean surface to mount the letters onto.  Well, our color matching wasn’t spot on so the backer panel looked a bit yellow in comparison to their tan building facade.  We did another color match and this time we got it just right and laid new vinyl over the backer panel which looked great.  Then, when we went to install their new aluminum letters we found something else was wrong --- they were WAY TOO SMALL.  We apologized for our error and immediately found our mistake in sizing and re-ordered the correct size letters.  Since the new letters were going to take about two weeks to come in, we applied cut vinyl lettering of their logo to the backer panel so their business would have identification in the meantime. While we don’t often make mistakes, we are sure to remedy them as quickly as possible and with no cost to the customer.  Our contacts at Family Psychiatric Center were incredibly understanding and gracious during this time.  We are happy to report that the new letters that came in were a perfect fit and were a wonderful improvement from where we started! - [Huston helps Montgomery Aviation / Indy Executive Airport With Lighting Solution](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-helps-montgomery-aviation-indy-executive-airport-with-lighting-solution/): Huston’s Electrical Service Division recently had the opportunity to assist in retrofitting the interior lighting at the Montgomery Aviation / Indy Executive Airport in Zionsville, IN.  We worked closely with Sean White, General Manager, in finding the appropriate LED fixture for the airplane hangars. Pete Septoski evaluated the different LED lighting options and decided on the RAB Rail225 high bay fixture.  The new LED fixtures replaced existing 400 watt HID high bay fixtures. The improvement was monumental and resulted in increased quality and quantity of light, 50% reduction in energy cost and a rebate check from the local utility provider of $10,701.00.  Sean commented, “I would say that the improvement in lighting in our hangers is 10 fold what it used to be.  It has made a huge difference for both our employees and our customers and we look forward to recovering our costs quickly through the energy savings.” Lighting retrofits have additional benefits such as; increased sales, safety and security, employee morale, lower energy costs and all around aesthetics.  We were founded in 1939 by Donald and Julia Huston.  They worked out of a small office and barn located on Markland Ave. in Kokomo, Indiana.  Don got his start doing small electrical work while Julia prepared and delivered the billings after a day of teaching school.  At the start of WWII, Don had some copper wire on hand.  This was an integral part of being able to do electrical work as copper wire was rationed for the war, but because he had stock he could replace it as he used it.  In the early 70’s his son, David Huston, took over and ran the company as President & CEO before he passed away in 1997.  It was around this time that Huston opened an office in Lafayette.  Jon and Jason Huston currently manage our Lafayette location and are highly involved in the local community.  In recent years we have expanded by opening a YESCO Franchise, and office in Westfield, and a large format printing division in Lafayette – Eight38 Graphics.    Our roots are firmly planted in electrical contracting, but over the years Huston has expanded to offer our customers a wide variety of services.  We have divisions in generators and compressors, telecommunications, signs and services, Control4 home and business automation and SMART interactive displays.  Our customers appreciate that we are able to help them with so many of their home and business needs, while having employees that are knowledgeable in their specific division to ensure that the customer is getting the best service we can provide.    Our employees, customers, and community have allowed us to grow and prosper for more than 75 years.  We have had the privilege of being engaged in our community and are so thankful for the opportunities presented to us.  Thank you for your continued support! - [Huston Team Helps City Of Kokomo With New Stadium Signage](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-team-helps-city-of-kokomo-with-new-stadium-signage/): Huston’s Sign Division had the privilege to work with the City of Kokomo on many of the signs at the Kokomo Municipal Stadium.  The City of Kokomo approached Huston with architectural drawings and designs and Huston offered competitive pricing and ultimately delivered in manufacturing and installing the various sign packages.  We worked closely with Ross Pierce, the City’s System Project Designer.  The sign projects came in phases as the stadium was being built and from start to finish we were involved for a year and a half with approximately 70 signs throughout the stadium.  We are grateful to have been a part of this beautiful stadium and all that it has to offer.

Huston’s signs include the architectural letters identifying “Kokomo Municipal Stadium” and Section Seating signs, Suite, Restroom, and other Wayfinding signage.
The architectural letters reading “Kokomo Municipal Stadium” are 1” thick cast aluminum letters that are stud-mounted into the brick that surrounds the stadium.
 
Inside the stadium there are multi-layer painted aluminum signs that identify section seating, suite numbers, and restrooms.  We ended up producing about 30 signs directing fans where their seats or other amenities are located, with another 30 signs labeling each room in the stadium.  These signs hang from the ceiling or are mounted perpendicularly on steel beams.
 
Additionally, there are many multi-layer acrylic signs that are ADA compliant identifying handicap seating, restrooms, tickets, offices, storage rooms, and “No-Smoking”. To better define certain zones, we needed some extra signage to show that some space is for ADA compliant seating. We also wanted to re-emphasize that Kokomo Municipal Stadium is a smoke-free environment with signs throughout.

- [Gas City’s Industrial Park Gets New Pylon Sign](https://hustonelectric.com/gas-citys-industrial-park-gets-new-pylon-sign/): Gas City’s Industrial Park now has a pylon sign to advertise its businesses including the Walmart Distribution Center, American Woodmark, Wright Repair, and BWI (Butterworth Industries).  This multi-tenant sign is internally illuminated with LEDs providing a nice, bright-white illumination for the sign faces.  The tenant faces are flat with digitally printed graphics while the header cabinet has pan formed faces with digitally printed graphics.  With the help of Bowman Construction, the foundation was added by excavating and setting two steel tubes in concrete.  From there, we welded the signs to the steel tubes and the masonry was added. “Huston Electric was an easy choice for the city’s new industrial park sign.  We have worked with Huston in the past and have never been disappointed.  Their level of training, attention to detail and quick response to our needs resulted in a successful project that complements our industrial park.The clients of our industrial park are pleased at the increased visibility for their companies.  Samantha Milburn was great to work with, her knowledge, experience and professionalism are an asset to Huston.  Thanks Huston, we look forward to working with you again.” - Brad Kline, Permits Officer We want to send a big “thank you” to the City of Gas City for choosing Huston for this sign project! - [Huston Upgrades Rieth Riley’s Asphalt Plant Lighting](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-upgrades-rieth-rileys-asphalt-plant-lighting/): Rieth-Riley is an industry leader in asphalt and concrete paving, site preparation and excavation, bridge construction, and underground utility installation . Because they supply asphalt to a huge area, there is constant traffic through the plant at all hours of day and night. They simply don’t have time for inefficient exterior safety lighting, so they called Huston Electric for a much-needed upgrade. Their 15 existing outdoor security lights were 500 watt halogen light fixtures. Not only did these lights cost around $3,200.00  to operate, they are  40 to 60 feet in the air. The height of the fixtures makes maintenance dangerous and very expensive.
Huston Electric replaced the outdated fixtures with LEDTRONICS energy efficient 150 watt LED light fixtures. These lights will be virtually maintenance free, eliminating that cost altogether. Because they are energy efficient, the new bulbs will save Rieth-Riley over $2,200 a year in energy costs. In addition to the money savings, these lights will increase plant safety by casting a brighter, cleaner light.

Their 12 existing 1100 watt metal halide fixtures were inefficient and expensive to operate, costing them over $5,000 a year! We installed new 400 watt Cooper Lighting HBLED fixtures, for a utility cash rebate of over $1,000. The energy savings for these new fixtures will be over $3,000 a year, not to mention maintenance savings of $1,500 since they will never have to change a lamp.   Cooper Lighting HBLED fixture Milestone Contractors provide construction services for all phases of highway construction and site development throughout the state of Indiana.   Having the ability to be the sole contractor needed for the job is a great source of pride for them, and they strive to deliver intricate projects on time and within budget without compromising safety.     Saving money isn’t the only way these new LED fixtures will benefit Milestone. LED lights turn on immediately, with no wait time. The old metal halide lamps took up to 15 minutes to warm up before reaching their full light output. On Saturday, August 27th, we will be playing to benefit two deserving local charities, Food Finders Food Bank and the YMCA. Founded in 1981, Food Finders has donated over 7 million pounds of food annually to Tippecanoe and 15 surrounding counties.  While that’s pretty impressive, they actually do even more to help the community. For low-income Lafayette residents, the JP Lisack Community Food Pantry serves as an easily accessible emergency resource. The Food Finders Food Bank Food Resource & Education Center  offers nutrition classes, SNAP assistance, and referral services to other social-service organizations. By teaching families about budgeting, meal preparation, cooking, and nutrition, Food Finders aims to help them become more independent.
The Lafayette Family YMCA believes everyone should have access to a healthy lifestyle, regardless of age, ability, or income level. With two locations, they have been an important part of the Lafayette community since 1889. Through their youth programs, children can get much needed exercise and make new friends in a safe environment. Parents work out worry-free thanks to the included childcare program, and young adults develop leadership skills and form relationships with their peers in teen programs. All of this is done with a focus on their core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

- [New High Resolution Audio Brings Powerful High Quality Sound Back To Music!](https://hustonelectric.com/new-high-resolution-audio-brings-powerful-high-quality-sound-back-to-music/): Do you remember carrying around that 8-pound binder you had filled with all of those shiny little round things called CDs? The audio quality was fantastic on all the new music and even Steve Miller Band’s greatest hits sounded amazing remastered. And then came along this little device called the Ipod.  And we said, “You mean I can take all my Weezer, Nirvana, and Pink Floyd CDs and put them in my hip pocket? Count me in. ” All of that convenience and portability was great but…there was a catch; the compression of bit rate and bit depth. Without getting into a lot of technical jargon, what that means is all of that uncompressed data on a CD had to be smashed to a smaller size for transportation and storage on an Ipod or MP3 player. The CD format to them is like an 8 track to my generation. And this generation has moved into the world of music streaming. - [HUSTON RELIGHTS OMNI FORGE](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-relights-omni-forge/): Onmi Forge’s old-fashioned 440 watt high pressure sodium lights kept their plant dull and yellowed, so they reached out to Huston Electric for a lighting upgrade. Inefficient lighting inflates energy costs and can have a negative impact on employee safety and morale.  Huston Electric recommended switching their lighting over to LED, which can cut energy costs in half, and can improve morale, safety and the overall workspace atmosphere.
To accommodate Omni Forge’s production schedule, the Huston Electric crew worked second shift, reducing any employee safety issues or down time. They got to work right away, first removing all 75 of the 440 watt fixtures and disposing of them in an environmentally safe way. Huston Electric then furnished and installed 75 brand-new 183 watt, energy efficient LED Lithonia light fixtures in the nonproduction 277 volt area.

The result of this LED upgrade was nothing short of dramatic. The biggest and most immediate difference happened the moment the new LED lights were switched on.
What had been a dull, yellowed work area was transformed into a brighter, whiter,  and cleaner looking environment. LED fixtures emit a clearer and brighter light, improving visibility, safety, and morale for employees working near the 2,500 degree furnaces.

- [Local Lafayette Business Sign Receives Much Needed Restoration](https://hustonelectric.com/local-lafayette-business-sign-receives-much-needed-restoration/): Wabash StationsWe are always telling you about new signs and the latest and greatest that we have to offer, but did you know we can work with what you’ve got to give your sign a facelift? We recently worked with Wabash Stations to rebuild their existing pole sign and install new faces for their tenants. This sign was rusted and falling apart, but it wasn’t too big a challenge for us! We removed the cabinet and rebuilt it to ensure that it was safe and secure. - [Ladies of Huston Give Back – Our Ladies Wire a Habitat for Humanity House](https://hustonelectric.com/ladies-of-huston-give-back-our-ladies-wire-a-habitat-for-humanity-house/): Cindy Taylor from Habitat for Humanity approached Huston Electric for help with a very specific request… She was looking for electricians that happened to be women. Cindy, Habitat for Humanity’s Director of Development, explained that Women Build was created to make women feel more comfortable volunteering. The build site is made up almost entirely of women, and each house is then turned over to a deserving woman and her family.  Without having to worry about the stereotypical construction site atmosphere, many women are able to relax and enjoy the volunteer experience.

Many of Habitat for Humanity’s finished homes go to single women with young children. “Our Women Build is kind of one big nurturing thing…We make sure that everybody meets the homeowner and that makes it much more personal”, Cindy explained. For the homeowner, “it creates an enormous amount of pride and accomplishment”, a greater sense of security, and the chance to pursue dreams that wouldn’t have otherwise been attainable.
We were excited to offer our support for their eleventh Women Build, so we assembled a crew of ladies lead by electrician Jackie Gillis.  Jackie, Jennifer, Kristina, Robin, Cathy, and Kara have been working hard to wire the house, volunteering a total of 60 hours so far.

- [Huston Electric Gives Back – Powering the Taste of Tippecanoe](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-electric-gives-back-powering-the-taste-of-tippecanoe/): Every summer for the last 35 years, food vendors, musicians, and thousands of hungry people have filled the streets of downtown Lafayette for the annual Taste of Tippecanoe. With this year’s construction, setting up the 33 vendors and 4 music stages could have been quite difficult. Fortunately, Huston Electric rose to the challenge and got the job done.   Huston Electric has been setting up the power for the Taste of Tippecanoe for the last eight years. This year, Matt Huston was added as a committee member, and was able to have a more hands on role in planning the event. Frequent communication prevented delays, and his knowledge of downtown Lafayette was indispensable when determining the layout of the booths and stages. Utilizing the available hook-ups and strategically placed generators, they were able to balance the flow of power in a way that prevented power outages or any other major issues.   That’s not to say setbacks didn’t happen. One of the unique attractions at this year’s Taste of Tippecanoe was a live art demonstration, put on by the Twin Lakes High School welding program. Students set up a portable welding machine in the Crossroads Art Zone (located at 3rd and Colombia Street) and welded a sculpture while the crowd watched. A snag in getting power to the welding machine could have prevented the students from showcasing their talents, but thanks to quick thinking from Huston Electric, the power was restored and the demonstration was a success.   Chris June, marketing and events director of Tippecanoe Arts Federation, is thankful to have Huston Electric’s support. They are “a great partner, helping to make sure behind-the-scenes pitfalls are at a minimum”. The Taste of Tippecanoe is the largest single-day fundraiser for the arts in the state of Indiana, and June said he was surprised there weren’t more issues. With the help of Huston Electric, the event was “fun to figure out. They got it done, they really took care of business.”   In all, it took the Huston Electric crew close to 100 hours and 20,000 feet of cable to power vendor booths, music stages, a welding demonstration, and air conditioning for a VIP area. - [Cold Calling – Not a lost art.](https://hustonelectric.com/cold-calling-not-a-lost-art/): Last October I had some time in between a couple of meetings and decided to stop in to Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre because I noticed their exterior sign was not fully illuminating.  When I introduced myself to the facility manager Nick Stark and let him know the reason I stopped by, he said that the sign was on hold for now but he had an immediate need for new lighting in the kitchen.  After reviewing the scope of work, I ran back to the office after my next appointment and gave him a proposal to retrofit his existing lighting in kitchen from T12 to T8.  We were out there 7 days later installing new lamps and ballasts in his kitchen. - [Huston works with Kokomo YMCA on signage at beautiful new facility](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-works-with-kokomo-ymca-on-signage-at-beautiful-new-facility/): Huston Electric’s Sign Division had the privilege of working with the Kokomo YMCA on the signage at their new facility.  All of the exterior channel letters and architectural letters were provided and installed by Huston Signs.  We provided (2) sets of internally illuminated LED channel letters of the Y logo reading “the” “Y” “YMCA”.  Under the logos are formed acrylic architectural letters honoring Delmar E. - [Eight38 Brings Logansport’s Local Art Back to Life](https://hustonelectric.com/eight38-helps-the-city-of-logansport-bring-local-art-to-life/): Recently we had the opportunity to work with Pamela Leeman, Logans Landing and the City of Logansport to bring some local art to life.  Funding for the art was provided through proceeds of "Dancing with our Stars", an event that was established in 2010 to raise money to provide public art in the downtown and create an art district.  Logans Landing, Dancing with our Stars, event chairman Pamela Leeman commissioned works by local artists to be displayed publicly through their downtown.  We worked with the artists to ensure that their pieces were utilized as they liked, and that the print quality did their masterpieces justice.  The artwork was printed direct to substrate on dibond panels, and installed in framework around the town.  Two additional pieces were installed on the Visitor’s Center, which really helped the renovated building to STAND OUT!  We are grateful for the opportunity to help these artists share their work, read more about them and the City of Logansport at: http://www.indystar.com/story/news/politics/2015/12/20/public-art-brightens-downtown-logansport/77667528/. - [Huston Receives 2015 Reader’s Choice Award for the category “Best Electrician”!](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-receives-2015-readers-choice-award-for-the-category-best-electrician/): On November 13, 2015 the Journal & Courier listed Huston Electric, Inc. as the winner of the2015 Reader’s Choice Award for the category “Best Electrician”.  We are so thankful to have received this award for the last 5 years, since “Best Electrician” has been a category. We were founded in 1939 by Donald and Julia Huston.  They worked out of a small office and barn located on Markland Ave. in Kokomo, Indiana.  Don got his start doing small electrical work while Julia prepared and delivered the billings after a day of teaching school.  At the start of WWII, Don had some copper wire on hand.  This was an integral part of being able to do electrical work as copper wire was rationed for the war, but because he had stock he could replace it as he used it.  In the early 70’s his son, David Huston, took over and ran the company as President & CEO before he passed away in 1997.  It was around this time that Huston opened an office in Lafayette.  Jon and Jason Huston currently manage our Lafayette location and are highly involved in the local community.  In recent years we have expanded by opening a YESCO Franchise, and office in Westfield, and a large format printing division in Lafayette – Eight38 Graphics. Our roots are firmly planted in electrical contracting, but over the years Huston has expanded to offer our customers a wide variety of services.  We have divisions in generators and compressors, telecommunications, signs and services, Control4 home and business automation and SMART interactive displays.  Our customers appreciate that we are able to help them with so many of their home and business needs, while having employees that are knowledgeable in their specific division to ensure that the customer is getting the best service we can provide. - [New Digtal Sign Helps Peru Schools Better Communicate With Community.](https://hustonelectric.com/new-digtal-sign-helps-peru-schools-better-communicate-with-community/): The students, parents, and staff at Peru Community Schools are now enjoying a new full color electronic message center at the Middle School! This summer Huston replaced their static changeable copy reader board with a new full color Daktronics LED digital display. Schools often give announcements over loud-speakers for students to hear information and also mail monthly newsletters to their homes, but now they are able to communicate with parents and students daily using the digital sign. School administrators can now publish information on the sign regarding sporting events, extra-curricular activities, and more to keep students and parents informed on school events. Huston also provided Peru’s High School with an electronic message center in January of 2013 and it has worked out so well that they decided to do the same for the Middle School. Huston has been a long-time electrical contractor for Peru Community Schools and we are privileged to work with them on their signage needs as well. - [Tipton County Fairgrounds are really “getting the word out” with their new electronic message center!](https://hustonelectric.com/tipton-county-fairgrounds-are-really-getting-the-word-out-with-their-new-electronic-message-center/): The Tipton County Fairgrounds are really “getting the word out” with their new electronic message center!  What better way to advertise their special events than with this awesome new digital sign?!   The Fairgrounds previously had a static sign with changeable plastic letters so they were only able to advertise one message at a time.  Now with the new Daktronics electronic message center they can change their message every few seconds to inform the community of their events. Huston Electric’s Account Executive, Samantha Milburn, worked with Lary Graves of the Tipton County Fairgrounds on the planning of this project.  Lary felt a digital sign would be a great way for the Fairgrounds to let more people in the community know about the various events they host throughout the year.  He was tired of having to change the plastic letters on the old sign and knew that a digital sign would get more attention.  Because so many businesses in Tipton utilize the Fairgrounds’ indoor and outdoor facilities they have come to have close relationships with many of these business owners.  Lary thought some of these businesses would be interested in sponsoring the new digital sign so he approached several of them with the idea and it was a hit!  In return for their sponsorship Lary decided to display these sign sponsors’ logos or business names on the aluminum portion of the sign as well as market their information digitally on the sign. Huston was privileged to have helped with the signage and electrical needs at their new location. To help save on the investment we were able to re-use the existing Salvation Army logo shields and we then provided and installed new front-lit channel letters reading “FAMILY STORE”. We were also able to re-use their 6’ tall Salvation Army shield over the loading dock for identification for deliveries. Huston’s Electrical Service Division provided electrical service to the garage doors at the loading dock and various other components in the building. Samantha Milburn, Account Executive for Huston’s Sign Division, worked with Captain Brandenburg of the Salvation Army from start to finish on the project. - [Huston Electric Prefab Shop delivers yet again](https://hustonelectric.com/huston-electric-prefab-shop-delivers-yet-again/): The Main Street assisted living center project in Lafayette was awarded to Huston Electric in mid-April of 2014. Once the drawings were received by Huston Electric, Prefab shop manager Brady McKinney and Prefab shop foreman Rob Melin instantly saw the opportunity to use the Prefab shop to help with the coordination, planning, and budgeting of this project. They then sat down with project foreman Ken Rayman to discuss the plan of attack, and the steps needed to prefab all the necessary material needed for the individual rooms and hallways. After the plan was in place work began immediately to ensure the project stayed on schedule. The Prefab shop was in charge of assembling all the devices needed for the rooms and hallways, as well as the low voltage data, cutting smurf tube for the low voltage boxes, cutting over 30,000 feet of MC Cable for homeruns, device wiring, and assembling homerun terminal boxes. When all necessary material was assembled for a room, it was placed into a bin labeled with the room’s number along with the room’s drawing and was deemed ready to be shipped. These bins were then delivered to the job site and ready to be installed in their respected rooms. This process ensured that the room installations went smooth and were done in the most efficient way possible. The job plans to be completed in the winter of 2014. - [With a little hard work and a lot of passion, what was old is new again!](https://hustonelectric.com/with-a-little-hard-work-and-a-lot-of-passion-what-was-old-is-new-again/): Last year, Kevin Krippner with Culligan contacted Sarah Hill in regards to sprucing up their existing pylon sign.  The existing sign was chipped, faded, out of date, and had their old logo on it.  We removed the existing faces, scraped the existing posts, painted the posts “Culligan Blue” and installed the new pan, painted, embossed sign faces with the new logo.  The signs looks great, and with such a beautiful exterior we thought we should bring some branding inside with an interior wall wrap.  Kevin had put a lot of effort into remodeling the interior of this building, but his existing paneled counter didn’t fit in anymore.  Eight38 Graphics suggested wrapping the desk with vinyl graphic, to give the paneling a fresh look that would really STAND OUT!
